Kelly is a freelance crime writer and has a popular blog, The Woman Condemned. She chronicles her interactions with death row female inmates, offering a glimpse into the strange, sometimes sad world of the women sitting in prison and waiting to die. Kelly will tell you honestly and frankly how she feels– guilty? Innocent? Deserving of the death penalty? -- at the same time showing compassion.
Initially I was skeptical of her correspondence with inmates. I was employed in a women’s prison; my “inmate’s bullshit meter” was always going through the roof. And I am leery of anyone who thinks crime and criminals are cool. But Kelly Banaski is grounded. She does not write inmates for the thrill or the shock value. She is using the crimes as tools to prevent future crime: How does childhood and environment shape our future? What went so wrong with normal people that they turned into murderers, or what happened to make a monster? I respect her. As a victim’s advocate and a believer in crime prevention rather than reaction, I support Kelly Banaski’s work. Now I am excited to announce we are working together on this presentation project.
In our presentation, I discuss the Paul Reid serial killer murder case and the impact of crime and the criminal justice system on victims. Kelly will be discussing her work and what she has learned from criminals themselves. We hope to educate and inform, to prevent future crime and to help crime victims.
